In iOS11 it was possible to search for nearby photographs. I can't find that in iOS12. Has it gone or is it just hidden away somewhere? I used to use this fairly regularly.

I found it - it is there, just well hidden.
Open a photograph, swipe up and Places is the first thing shown along with "Show Nearby Photos"
Does this count as 'cool stuff found'?

Yeah, from my experiments that seems to have disappeared as a "category".
Nearest approximation I can think of would be to use Albums > Places > Map view

I think that's a bit rubbish - It was a real useful feature.
