I have an iMac that is about 4 years old and just bought a new iMac.  I want to use the older iMac as an extened desktop from the new one.  I bought a USB-c to Mini Displaypoet cable 4k 60 Hz.  I plugged the correct cable into the back of both system but its not working.  when i go to display from system preferances i dont see the options that when have read about it says i should see.  Help Please.

Indeed, I tell my clients that they need to “Command” the target iMac to go into “slave” mode before it will allow itself to be used. 😀

How can I do that?

See the links above....
My comment relates to using Command-F2 key press on the “slave” iMac

turn on your imac and make sure you have the other Mac is logged in. connect the two macs and press command+F2 on the keyboard of the iMac that you want to use as a display.
