I have an aging imac late 2012. I would like to leave it on all the time and I’m worried about problems when the power ‘blinks’. I’m looking at UPSs and I’m thinking about getting the APC BN650M1 - It has a USB communications port. I remember years ago that APC had software called Powerchute. When I looked today it seems they only have a windows version available.

My question is: do I still need software to make the imac connected to the UPS auto shut down? Please assume that I have the USB comm port connected to a USB port on the imac.

Macs speak to APC UPSs without any 3rd party software needed. Just plug the USB in and it works.
once you plug in the USB, you will see more options in the Power pane of System Preferences to select how you want your Mac to behave when on UPS.

That’s great news. I was wondering if that was the case. Thanks.
