Google Duo, a Platform Agnostic Competitor to FaceTime

| Cool Stuff Found

Google released Duo on Tuesday, “a simple 1-to-1 video calling app” for iOS and Android. Google set it up to operate around your existing phone number. Unlike Apple’s FaceTime, Google Duo doesn’t care if you’re on iOS or Android. It also has an interesting feature called Knock Knock that allows the callee to see the caller’s live video feed before you answer. The video below demonstrates Knock Knock. Google Duo is “free,” and is available at the App Store and Google Play. [Update: as noted by @grempe on Twitter, Google Duo calls are encrypted end-to-end, an important privacy element to protect users from prying eyes far and wide. – Bryan]

  1. Might have to check it out. I end up using Skype most of the time because either the person I want to call isn’t on macOS or iOS, or even if the other person is on an Apple device FaceTime just won’t work. Since MS bought Skype I’d like to find another option and maybe this might be it.

Again, Google leading the way with agnostic simplicity. Poor Apple can never think this way because of it’s own limited “sandbox”. As far as that tired pathetic “you are being data based without your consent” I say get a life. Every call you make on any device is captured by at least one party if not more. Do your research. If you have cable TV, every time you switch channels, every show you watch, all of your viewing habits can easily be traced. If you buy an item in a store via credit card, you are a piece of recorded data. If you think Apple doesn’t have a full bio on YOU who makes purchases from the App store or Apple Store or iTunes then drink some more drone-juice. Google seems to use their data to make better products just as Apple uses your purchasing habits to tailor product to you.

Also not available in Canada. Kinda strange that these major corporations (both Google and Apple) claim to be global in scope, but can’t seem to see past the U.S. border.

“Every call you make on any device is captured by at least one party if not more.”. FALSE

“Poor Apple can never think this way because of it’s own limited “sandbox.” The sandbox is their strength, not their limitation.

Google makes some fine products. You just have to understand that they excel in part by being the nosiest company on Earth.
