His most recent album, <em>The Life of Pablo<\/em>, was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). What&#8217;s new and different is that it did so through streams only.\u00a0<em>Pablo<\/em> wasn&#8217;t made available as a digital download on iTunes or other\u00a0online music stores. It was instead offered\u00a0as a streaming product through first Tidal, and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.macobserver.com\/tmo\/article\/so-much-for-never-famous-from-the-life-of-pablo-now-on-apple-music\">then Apple Music<\/a>, Google Play, Spotify, and other services. <em>Pitchfork<\/em> reported that <em>Pablo<\/em> has been streamed a staggering 3 billion times, with 1.5 billion of those streams in the U.S. It&#8217;s the U.S. figures that earned it Platinum status, and that certification did not include the copies of <em>Pablo<\/em> sold\u00a0direct by Kanye. Streaming music\u2014including Apple Music\u2014are clearly the near-term future of the music industry. Earning Platinum certification through streaming only is\u00a0symbolic of that\u00a0tidal shift.
