The list of the fastest supercomputers, at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.top500.org\/lists\/2017\/11\/\">Top500.org<\/a>, had been showing the U.S. falling behind. Recently the Oak RIdge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee announced that the new, IBM-built \u00abSummit\u00bb supercomputer is capable of 200 petaflops. By comparison, a modern, fast desktop PC is in the teraflop class, making Summit about 200,000 times faster. ORNL&#8217;s release noted that uses for the machine include: \u00abmachine learning and deep learning to problems in human health, high-energy physics, [and] materials discovery.
