Mac OS 8.5: GO FOR IT!

Part V: The Best of The Rest...

The new Help Browser
On the few occasions we consulted online OS help files, we were pleasantly surprised to find that Apple tossed the awkward Apple Guide concept (though that extension is still included for older applications still using that format) for an HTML-based Help Browser. The Help Browser is quick, and much easier and intuitive to use than previous online help files. Help pages are even printable
now.

OS 8.5's Installer has matured yet again from OS 7.6's revamped installer. The install app will now go beyond checking your hard drive for problems and actually fix them. It's now also easier to find and select the "Clean Install" option, which is a very good idea when installing OS 8.5. Finally, you can customize your custom installations -- for instance, you can install one control panel from the Open Transport suite, rather than all of the OT software at once-- and you can SAVE those custom installations for future use.

Finally, did you know that you get a free upgrade -- normally worth about $30.00-- to QuickTime Pro with OS 8.5? You'll need to register your OS purchase on Apple's web site, and then you'll receive your QT Pro serial number via e-mail. (ANYTHING to get rid of that annoying "Upgrade to QuickTime Pro" advertisement you see when starting up MoviePlayer or Picture Viewer!)

The Mac Observer Spin:: As we mentioned at the beginning, these are only some of our favorite aspects of Mac OS 8.5. There are dozens of other improvements, upgrades and features thrown into the mix to make this upgrade worthwhile. We think that this is the first OS upgrade in several years that's TRULY worth it's price tag. (Some folks say that Sherlock alone is worth the money.) If you're on the fence in deciding to upgrade, come on down -- move on up to Mac OS 8.5.
