To add to the long list of unofficial app stores released for iOS users in recent times, we now have another called AltStore. Designed for iOS devices, it offers an easy way of using your computer to install apps and games onto your device. Although it has some app files built-in, it also allows you to sideload your own IPA files downloaded via the internet. It is free to use and offers a great alternative to the official app store.

How to Download AltStore using Mac:

You will need your Mac computer because you need to install AltServer, a companion app to the store. Its simple enough to do; follow these steps as written:

  1. Plug your iPhone or iPad into your Mac using the official cable.

  2. Open the browser you use on your Mac and go to the AltStore website. From there, download the AltServer companion app.

  3. Launch your toolbar and click on AltStore

  4. Click on Install AltStore and choose your device from the list.

  5. Now wait; once AltStore has been installed on your iPhone or iPad, open the AltServer companion app on your Mac – this needs to be left running in the background.

  6. When you want to install apps on your device or update the apps, you have two options – plug your device in and use AltServer or set up Wi-Fi Sync in iTunes, ensuring both your Mac and iOS device are on the same network.

AltStore Pros and Cons:

Everything has its pros and cons, and AltStore is no exception:

  • You do not need to jailbreak your iPhone or iPad.

  • The apps are self-signed, so the certificates cannot be revoked.

  • You can choose from pre-installed apps or use your own IPA files from the internet.

  • You can only have three active apps on your device at any one time – AltStore is one of those, so you can only download two more.

  • You need your Mac and the AltServer companion app; your device must be physically connected to your Mac or Wi-Fi Sync enabled in iTunes.

  • If your Apple ID is a free one, you need to refresh the apps at least once every 7 days. If you have a paid developer ID, they last for 12 months.

Frequently Asked Questions:

These are the answers to some of the more commonly asked questions about AltStore.

What is AltStore?

AltStore is an unofficial store with a difference. It lets you create developer certificates for singing and installing unofficial games and apps.

Is it a Jailbreak?

No, AltStore is not a jailbreak. You also do not need to install a jailbreak to use it either. It is nothing more than an app store that allows you to sign unsigned IPA files and install them on your device.

How Does AltStore Work?

AltStore was developed by a well-known and trusted developer, Riley Testut. In developing it, he used a feature provided to developers by Apple, a feature that lest them test apps before they let them go to the store. That neat feature is how you can sign the apps yourself without relying on many other alternative stores’ enterprise certificates. It is also why you can only have three active apps at once and why you need your Apple ID to install it. One of those active apps is AltStore itself so, when you want a different app on your device, you will need to delete one of the others you installed.

What Apps Can I Download?

There are no man apps already preinstalled, but the developer is planning to add some more later. There are some viral downloads, and these are the top ones:

  • GBA4iOS

  • Happy Chick Emulator

  • Provenance

  • iNDS

  • Chimera Jailbreak

How Should I Use AltStore?

It would help if you used it the way the developer recommends:

  1. Make sure AltServer is set to launch when you switch on or log in to your Mac.

  2. When you are not using your Mac, please place it in Sleep mode, and keep your device connected. This is very important, particularly overnight when you are not using either – iOS can wake up and refresh all your apps.

  3. Try to open AltStore at least once per week, if not twice. When you do that, it can be prioritized by iOS and your apps easily refreshed. If you do not do this, you will need to start over and reinstall it.

AltStore is free to use, and you dont have to jailbreak to use it. Try it today and find a fantastic new way of getting the content you want on your device.
