A database that contained over 267 million Facebook user IDs, phone numbers, and IDs was discovered on the web. It wasn’t password-protected.
Comparitech partnered with security researcher Bob Diachenko to uncover the Elasticsearch cluster. Diachenko believes the trove of data is most likely the result of an illegal scraping operation or Facebook API abuse by criminals in Vietnam, according to the evidence.
Diachenko immediately notified the internet service provider managing the IP address of the server so that access could be removed. However, Diachenko says the data was also posted to a hacker forum as a download.

For a second there, you had me worried. I thought you were going to tell us that all 2 billion plus IDs had been exposed.
What a relief!
Well now, that should put to rest all those concerns from those FB cryptocurrency sceptic weenies, eh? I mean, at least this wasn’t a total security cock up; it was just a sub-total security cock up.
Think about it, that means that, if FB currently has about 2.45B active monthly users, and only 267 million IDs were exposed, then your odds of data insecurity were only about 1 in 10! I mean, that’s safer than…well not parachuting or cliff diving or swimming in a shark tank, but you get my point. It’s safer than a lot of gnarly stuff.
I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling better about this Libra cryptocurrency rollout already. Now, let me get back to ordering those new FB Portal thingees for my kids.
