Expensive Apple Hardware Isn’t New. Remember the Lisa?

The 2018 iPhones were fairly expensive, and this isn’t a new Apple strategy. The company has been down this road before with the Lisa computer.

Named for Saint Steve’s daughter, the Lisa project kicked off in 1978, finally making an appearance on 19 January 1983. It was pitched as a graphical competitor to the tiresome text-based computers dominating the marketplace.

Aside from all the snark the author pumped into the article, it’s a nice blast from the past. As Battlestar Galactica says, “All of this has happened before and all of this will happen again.”

  • No. We don’t remember the Lisa as NOBODY bought them. We also don’t remember the 20th anniversary EXPENSIVE yet slower than other Macs piece of junk that Apple in their infinite hubris tried to foist upon us. It took the iPad neé iPhone to finally allow Apple to charge an obscene margin on a successful product to ‘clones’ that actually think they are worth the money. 🤡

  • I get Apple’s past but honestly that is why growing up we never had an Apple Computer. I was born in 1975 and had 2 brothers. It wasn’t till 2007 that I got my first Mac Mini because I could afford it. Since then I have a 2011 iMac and a 2012 MacBook Pro. But I don’t intend on upgrading at all. I love Apple Products but with 2 kids and a mortgage there are more important things to spend money on instead of exorbitantly priced Apple Computers and phones. I’m pursuing a big move from this platform based on shear cost. It will be hard because I am totally immersed in the Apple Ecosphere. I have and iPhone XS Max and I use iCloud Family sharing for photos and Apple Music. Apple has practically killed the Low End Mac Culture because of fast software incompatibility. And isn’t even mentioning the terrible move of soldering ram and hard drives so we cant upgrade later as we can afford to.
