Calls from scammers pretending to be from Apple and Amazon have been appearing lately. In the case of Apple, some of them mention suspicious iCloud activity.

In both scenarios, the scammers say you can conveniently press 1 to speak with someone (how nice of them!). Or they give you a phone number to call. Don’t do either. It’s a scam. They’re trying to steal your personal information, like your account password or your credit card number.

  • What’s particularly annoying is that the spoof the incoming number so that it appears that the call is from Apple’s phone number.

Of course if you call Apple, they will tell you that the calls are scams and that they’ll never call or email asking for your personal information.

    1. Is there something that the telephone companies can do about spoofing? Almost certainly they are coming from robocall equipment and somehow they need to verified, registered, as legitimate. They are flagging calls as possible spam.

I don’t answer calls from people not in my address book. My default ringtone is silence that I “recorded” in GarageBand. Family, friends, my Doctor, and such have custom ringtones.
