iPhone 11 Pro Triggering Small Hole Phobia

There was much excitement at the new iPhone 11  Pro’s triple-lens camera array. However, it also caused problems for some people, BBC News reported.

Hundreds of smartphone users now claim the new design has triggered their “trypophobia”, an aversion to the sight of clusters of small holes. Trypophobia” was first coined in 2005 in online forum Reddit and it has since become widely talked about on social media. American Horror Story actress Sarah Paulson and model Kendall Jenner are among those who say they have the condition. Vision scientist Dr Geoff Cole, at the University of Essex, was part of the first full scientific study of trypophobia, working with his colleague, Prof Arnold Wilkins.

  • Charlotte et al:

Trypophobia is a thing. I actually heard the BBC report when it aired.

That said, this is essentially about the brain interpreting what it sees, which has less to do with the actual object than pattern recognition and the triggering of deep, hard-wired survival mechanisms (e.g. Something resembling spindly legs, even without the rest of a body being visible causes many people to react with fright/flight responses – a poisonous arachnid association).

In any case, I was not aware of it being as widely spread as the BBC report made it out to be, however, it will be interesting to see if this has any real impact both on iPhone 11 sales and Apple’s designs going forward.

I don’t think that it will measurably affect sales or design.

  • Writer Charlotte Henry – it must be a Friday, oh yes it is – oh wow Friday the 13th too, to publish this article?

I wonder, do these people, the ones with aversion to the sight of clusters of small holes – they can’t participate in an orgy I imagine?

Have a good weekend Charlotte. Thanks for the laugh.
