  • Unfortunately, in this three dimensional world which we live in, even the thinnest of films still have finite thickness. Which means if you fold such a film, the outer surface of the crease will somehow have to stretch more than the inner surface of said crease. Given the differential tensile stresses between the inner and outer surfaces of said crease, one would think that repeated folding and unfolding of the film along that crease would eventually lead to the film failing at the crease, no? (Okay, I exclude the case of a graphene film one carbon atom thick.)
