VICE Tests Amazon Ring’s Security, and it’s Not Good

Journalists at VICE tested the security of Amazon Ring security cameras, and they call it “awful.”

Ring is not offering basic security precautions, such as double-checking whether someone logging in from an unknown IP address is the legitimate user, or providing a way to see how many users are currently logged in—entirely common security measures across a wealth of online services.

    This article, plus Charlotte’s on smart home hacks, remains the principal reason why I have yet to ‘upgrade’ our humble abode with smart ware. Given the relative paucity of standards regulation for such devices, and the variability in native security protocols per device, we’re likely going to have to rely, for the foreseeable future, on a truly hardened and adaptable firewall from a major tech company behind which all of these devices can be secured.

    It’s not clear to me that HomeKit or any other product is there yet.
