|[11:30 AM] New PowerMac G4 Commercial Probably Real, But Never Apple's
by Bryan Chaffin
An interesting commercial has surfaced at AdCritic.com, a Web site that offers the latest commercials to hit the airwaves. The one that grabbed our attention is what appears to be a new ad for the PowerMac G4. Big budget and definitely professional, the new ad takes on the tone of a federal sting on smugglers trying to sell "one of them Supercomputers."
Our initial reaction to this commercial was that it may herald a new iteration of the PowerMac G4, but further reflection on the facts leads us to believe that this was a concept commercial made by Chiat-Day for Apple, but rejected by Apple in favor of the tank oriented Department of Defense add that ran when the G4s were introduced.
Thanks to Observer Karl Larsen for alerting us to this yesterday!

Note From The Editor: For those who didn't listened to The Mac Show last night, I was called a Bozo by Mac Show host Shawn King for thinking that the commercial was actually an Apple ad. He was right that this is not likely an ad of "Apple's" that has sneaked online, but rather a concept ad made by Chiat-Day. I'll accept the label of Bozo from Mr. King for not making that distinction! :-)
That said, we like this commercial far better than the one Apple chose to run. As Mr. King said on last night's show, it would have made a great companion commercial for Apple to have run side by side with the DoD commercial that did run. Of course, it's always hard to argue with success and Apple has certainly had great success with their G4 line.
In any event, this commercial is very interesting to see whether it is an outtake or a clever forgery. Our suggestion is to go and watch it while you can in case Apple legal decides to force the site to drop the commercial. In fact, the mere fact that they have not done so only lends credence to the idea that this was never their ad.
