Mac OS 8.5 Demo Days: Keep It Up!
[11:19 AM] Apple should consider making its "Demo Day" marketing model standard operating procedure for product launches from now on -- if crowd turnout and reaction were any indication (at least in the Alexandria, VA CompUSA), the launch of OS 8.5 on Saturday was a big hit.

If you could get your hands on a copy of the software, that is. In the absence of hard numbers from CompUSA, Demo Days volunteers from Saturday's morning shift said that dozens of copies of Mac OS 8.5 "flew out the door," leaving only about 15-20 copies for sale during the afternoon in Apple's Store-Within-A-Store section. All but three of those copies sold by the end of the Demo Days event at 5 p.m.

Interest in iMac remains strong as well. Perhaps it was Steve Jobs' "State of the Apple" address last Wednesday that spurred customers to come out and kick iMac's tires. Customers clustered around the iMacs on display, many armed with a barrage of questions for CompUSA staff and volunteers alike. Several shoppers were on a return trip to CompUSA to snatch up new peripherals and accessories for their already-purchased iMacs. Unlike the iMac's scant supply at its launch two months ago, there were plenty of iMacs on the showroom floor to meet demand.

The Mac Observer Spin: Mac OS 8.5 rocks, period. This is an OS update to get seriously excited about, offering more speed, more time-saving features, and more cool stuff (like Sherlock and Appearance Themes) than any other Mac OS upgrade. Apple's advertising slogan for OS 8.5 is Get An New Mac For $99. While that may be a slight exagerration, it's not much of one. Now, if Apple can assure that enough of these upgrades are in the retail channel....
