MacPEAK and Cygnet Work Together To Make Mac DVD-RAM Jukebox
MacPEAK and Cygnet Storage Solutions have announced that Mac users can use MacPEAK's MacJuke software with Cygnet's DVD-RAM jukeboxes, the DVD 100. DVD-RAM jukeboxes allow for multiple DVD-RAM discs to be used for network archiving, especially for large amounts of data. According to the two companies:

Powered by MacPEAK's versatile software, Cygnet's DVD-RAM jukeboxes write to DVD-RAM media and allow access to CD media of all formats including Apple HFS and HFS Extended. DVD-RAM media, the rewritable DVD format, can also be written inside Cygnet's DVD 100 or InfiniDVD libraries enabling easy and safe backups at any time. The robust features of MacJuke include the spanning of multiple DVD-RAM media to create large Apple HFS Extended volumes that can accommodate huge files required by publishing and prepress applications. Managed by MacJuke, the DVD 100, for instance, can be made to appear as one 260 GB volume (2.6GB x 100).

Additionally, users will be largely benefited by MacJuke's fully featured cataloger that helps them locate files easily and fast, even on media no longer contained in the jukebox. MacJuke also interfaces smoothly with third party database software such as Canto Cumulus bringing the requested information located in the jukebox on the client's desktop at the click of a button. Overall access time is reduced through MacJuke's directory caching that stores the media directory information on the internal startup disk to speed up all searches and finds. All of the AppleShare security privileges are maintained and system administrators have comprehensive control of the jukebox.

The recommended system requirements for this solution are a PowerMac, running MacOS 8.1 or better and Appleshare 5.0 or better. At least 15MB of RAM are necessary for RAM caching and a startup drive of minimum 2 GB capacity to hold the catalog and provide disk caching.

Flexible, expandable and upgradable, Cygnet's DVD-RAM series jukeboxes offer users unparalleled benefits such as incredible storage volume per footprint, and durable, long-life archival media. With the tower PC-like DVD 100 jukebox, users can create, store, backup, manage and access up to 260 GB for less than four cents per Mbyte. At its maximum capacity, the 19-in. rackmount InfiniDVD provides 1.3 Terabytes of archive or backup storage at 2.5 cents per Mbyte - including media.

The full version of MacJuke for DVD 100 is US$2995. MacPEAK is also offering a Lite version that does not include the full cataloging abilities for US$1795. More information can be found at the MacPEAK web site.
