The trading day began on a positive note when rumors swept the industry that Yahoo was planning a buyout of Excite@Home Corp. Once rumors were squashed by Excite@Home's president, the entire tech sector began a downward course.
Apple closed at 55 1/4, a loss of 1/2 or 0.90%). Volume was moderate with 3,275,300 shares trading hands.
With the exception of Hewlett-Packard which closed up, Apple's PC brethren had a poor day as well. IBM, Dell, Compaq, and Gateway 2000 all closed down.
The Dow went above and below its previous close through out the day though it ended on a positive note. The Dow closed at 10677.31, down 31.35, while the Nasdaq closed at 2587.94, down 35.69.
