Atomic Mac Receives Periodic Update
We would like to apologize for the cheesiness of the title, but it was impossible to resist. :-) Black Cat Systems has released another update to Atomic Mac, their periodic table of elements application for the Mac. The new version, 3.1, includes new features and other enhancements. According to Black Cat Systems:

The Atomic Mac is a periodic table of the elements for the Macintosh. In addition to the usual information found in such programs, The Atomic Mac also contains a wealth of nuclear information on each isotope, including half life, decay mode, and daughter products. X-ray data (fluorescence and binding energies) is also available. A molecular weight calculator makes it easy to find the molecular weight of compounds. A shaded diagram showing the ranges of physical properties makes it easy to visualize relationships across the periodic table.

This version adds a display of the state (gas, liquid, or solid) of the elements at a user defined temperature. You can move a slider back and forth to change the temperature, and actually see where elements change their state. In addition, it adds the ability to reduce the size of the main display window.

Data is displayed for the following physical properties:

  • Density
  • Heat of Vaporization
  • Heat of Fusion
  • Specific Heat
  • Thermal Conductivity
  • Linear Expansion Coefficient
  • Melting Point
  • Boiling Point
  • Atomic Radius
  • Photoelectric Work Function
  • Magnetic Susceptability
  • Electrical Resistivity
  • Electron Affinity
  • Electric Dipole Polarizability
  • State (gas, liquid, solid)

You can find more information and download links at the company's web site. Atomic Mac is shareware and the update is free to people who have registered within the last year. Check the company's web site for more upgrade information. The full version is priced at US$20.
