Amidst good news surrounding Intel and Dell, Apple's stock rose almost 3 points, erasing yesterday's losses, and then some. Intel got a bump from an analyst and announced new versions from their Pentium III and Celeron product lines and Dell announced a new consumer PC that includes a free year of Internet service through Dellnet. Dellnet is Dell's new national ISP.
That news along with some strong indicators from the chip sector was enough to boost the tech sector, including Apple. Apple closed at 53 11/16, a gain of 2 3/4 or 5.40%. Volume was moderate with 3,509,900 shares trading hands.
All of Apple's major PC competitors also rose including IBM, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Gateway 2000, and Compaq.
The Dow and the Nasdaq also fared well. The Dow closed at 10979.04, a gain of 115.88, while the Nasdaq closed at 2679.66, up 60.47.
