Apple Stock Watch: PC Companies Down, Apple Up
The market opened up strong this morning, but new inflation worries that surfaced during late morning trading brought many stocks back down. While this included most of Apple's major PC competitor's, it did not include Apple. Apple performed strongly throughout the day and closed up almost 2 points, and in fact, traded over 56 for a brief period. Apple closed at 55 11/16, up 1 13/16, or 3.36%. Volume was moderate with 3,409,200 shares trading hands.

Dell, Gateway 2000, Compaq, and Hewlett-Packard all closed down while IBM managed to pull back into positive territory late in the afternoon.

The Dow, which opened the trading session on a positive note, ended up closing with another strong loss. The Dow closed at 10655.15, down 136.14 . The Nasdaq closed slightly off at 2638.49, a loss of 1.52.
