Mac Game Development Engine Gets A New Beta
Beenox Studios has released the latest Beta of its role playing game development tool, ColdStone. ColdStone is an inexpensive game development engine aimed at developers anxious to develop games without reinventing the wheel. According to Beenox:

With CGE, you can create awesome stand-alone games which use this engine. For a registration fee of $30, you can access even more creative tools (music library, sound library, other Beenox tools, etc.), and you get the rights to sell your stand-alone game(s) with the ColdStone engine.

Beta 5 Improvements:

  • Item Sheet has been modified: the size text field has been replaced by a popup menu (which is really more intuitive)
  • there is now a "usable by" (under the class tab) list in which you can select the classes that will be able to use this item. If you don't select anything, the default settings of the class (in the class sheet) will be used. Example: if you want to create a magic two-handed sword for mages (which generally can't use this kind of weapon), check "mages" in the weapon sheet's class list.
  • Each item type has now specific actions (under the links tab). A weapon, for example, has 5 actions: Attack, Miss, Equip, UnEquip and Drop. You can specify a sound, a condition and a link for all the item actions. The action will be executed only if the condition is true (if there is a condition). The link will be executed each time the action is called (the condition's result doesn't matter).
  • Added some menu items (print, page setup, save as template, etc.) but they are not yet fully implemented so they have been disabled in the current version Engine:
  • Bug with the inventory when restoring saved game fixed
  • Item Type Actions are fully supported (i.e. conditions, sounds and links) but specific classes are not supported (no class restriction system is implemented yet).
  • Miscellaneous minor improvements (misspelling, visual tweaks, etc.) in both the editor and the engine.

The Mac Observer Spin: ColdStone is a very cool tool for the Mac gaming market. There are so many creative people using Macs and a tool like this really opens the market up to smaller developers who do not have the resources to develop a game engine of their own, but have everything needed to create a very exciting game. Check out ColdStone is this describes you and support their efforts by buying the US$30 licensed version.
