HouseCall Allows Techs/Macheads To Remotely Maintain Macs, Cheaply
Netopia has released two products today (see our story Netopia Announces Timbukto Pro 5.0). Timbukto HouseCall is a scaled down version of their more powerful Timbuktu Pro, a version that is aimed at Mac techs and other "experts" who are often called upon to fix friends, family, and client Macs.

As the Doctor, you can use HouseCall to observe or control a remote Macintosh machine just as if you were sitting in front of it. You save time, money, and aggravation by being able to quickly and accurately troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve user problems- from across the street or around the world.

Timbuktu HouseCall provides 'on-the-fly' support for Mac OS users. The Doctor version is free and available on the web. Anytime you find yourself on the road and needing to connect to another person's Mac, you can quickly download the Doctor version and get connect to your Patient right away. Patient versions of HouseCall are licensed in single, two, and ten-packs and are simple to install.

Exchange Files Over the Internet

With HouseCall, you can access the hard drive of a remote machine and transfer files to or from it. Just connect to the Patient, select the file and drag your file to the other volume. Nothing is faster, nothing is more complete, and nothing will make your life easier than the file exchange capabilities included with HouseCall.

Complete Security

Timbuktu HouseCall's 'Ask for Permission' feature insures complete security over any TCP/IP or Dial Direct connection. By going to your control panel, you can request to connect to another computer with the Patient version of HouseCall installed on it. The Patient must then affirmatively acknowledge your request in order to establish a connection and allow you to perform remote control and file transfer activities.

Internet Locator

With HouseCall, you can quickly find your patients on the Internet, especially those users with dynamic IP addresses-like the addresses handed to you from your ISP. Netopia hosts, 24 hours a day, the HouseCall Internet Locator server which marries your Patient's email address with their TCP/IP address in real-time, whenever they are online. Any time a Doctor wants to connect to a Patient, they only need to remember the Patient’s email address.

Tele/Modem Toggle

Using an analog phone line, you can toggle between a HouseCall modem connection and speaking to the other user. For example, if you were helping a Patient load a new software program, you could speak with them over the phone line, and then switch to the modem to enable HouseCall and check the installation on their hard drive. You could then switch back to voice and speak to the user again. HouseCall eliminates extra phone calls and reduces confusion.

Timbukto HouseCall is only available via electronic download. Pricing is handled in a "per-patient" basis.

Single-Patient License: $29.95
Twin-Patient License: $49.95
Ten-Patient License: $199.95

You can find more information at the company's web site.

The Mac Observer Spin: This sounds like an exciting product for many a Mac-nerd. Most of us have been called upon to "fix" Macs that belong to friends and family. Now we can let them spring US$30 and make our jobs a lot easier! :-)
