[8:00 AM] Cool New Mac Calculator Allows Voice Operation

WebToys.com has released an enhanced calculator program for the Mac OS, ProtoCalc SR/V. ProtoCalc SR/V is a feature packed option for those looking for a little more out of the Apple Menu's calculator. According to WebToys.com:

ProtoCalc SR/V is a powerful calculator for the MacOS, designed to showcase the Macintosh's most unique and powerful features. It supports Apple Events, AppleScript, OS8 Appearance Manager, Drag and Drop, Text-To-Speech, and even Speech Recognition.

It can be operated entirely via voice commands, for those don't always have their hands free! It can repeat back to you what you're typing for those who don't always watch what they're typing. It can undo the last thing you typed. It can even be scripted. In fact, it supports its own internal scripting system that allows you to save formulas and apply them to future calculations. Included are formulas for sales tax (based on .0825%), and computing 30% of calories for those constantly on a diet.

Within the scripting system, there's support for the following commands

  • Round
  • Mod
  • Square
  • Square Root
  • Sine
  • Cosine
  • Tangent
  • Percent
  • New scripts can be easily added and removed.

ProtoCalc SR/V is available as "ImprovementWare," which means that if you send in suggestions for improvements, and they make it into a future shareware version, you will get a free copy. In the meanwhile, the app is free. You can find more information on ProtoCalc SR/V, and improvement ware, at the WebToys.com web site.

The Mac Observer Spin: This is a cool looking calculator. Check out the web site, ignore the grammar errors, and look at the cool calculator. Also, the ability to speak your calculations is very handy, depending on how well it works.
