Apple is preparing a major upgrade for Siri in iOS 27, and new details show how deeply it is working with Google’s AI. The company has secured broad access to Gemini models, which allows it to build faster and more efficient features directly into its devices. This move supports Apple’s push to make Siri smarter while keeping performance fast on iPhones and other hardware.
The Information reports that Apple’s agreement with Google goes beyond a typical partnership, giving Apple the ability to use and modify Gemini models inside its own systems.
“Apple has complete access to the Gemini model in its own data center facilities. Apple can use that access to produce smaller models that power specific tasks or are small enough to run directly on Apple devices so they can run the tasks faster.”
This approach relies on a process called model distillation, where a larger AI model trains smaller versions that can run efficiently on-device. These smaller models reduce the need for cloud processing and improve speed, which fits Apple’s focus on privacy and performance.
“Since Apple has full access to Gemini, its student model can also learn to imitate the internal computations that Gemini uses to arrive at its answers.”
At the same time, the report notes that Apple’s internal AI teams continue to develop their own models, although their exact direction remains unclear. Apple appears to balance its in-house efforts with external partnerships to move faster.
Looking ahead, Apple plans to introduce these Siri upgrades at WWDC 2026. The update is expected to bring memory features and proactive suggestions, such as alerts to leave early for traffic before important trips. These changes point to a more context-aware Siri that handles everyday tasks with better timing and accuracy.
