Saturday’s MLS Cup will look different on screen because four iPhones will film parts of the broadcast. The league confirmed this plan after using iPhones during two Friday Night Baseball games. You’ll see the phone-captured clips clearly, since the broadcast will show a small Shot on iPhone graphic every time that angle appears.
MLS told Sports Business Journal that the championship match will use its biggest camera setup yet. It includes more than 30 cameras, from robotic goal cams to drones. The four iPhones sit inside this larger system and help the crew offer more viewing angles without slowing production.
League executive Seth Bacon said the idea grew out of its partnership with Apple. He added, inside the same conversation, that working with Apple helps MLS test new production ideas while keeping the video quality consistent.
iPhone Fits Into the Broadcast
One of the most important angles during the match will come entirely from an iPhone. Anytime viewers see a shot from a high position behind the goal, that angle comes straight from the phone. The league sees this as proof that the device records clean, stable footage even in a demanding sports setting.
The approach also extends Apple’s Shot on iPhone campaign. Instead of a polished commercial, the championship match shows what the phone captures in real time. It gives viewers a direct look at the phone’s abilities during fast action.
The MLS Cup will stream for free on Apple TV.
