iPhone 17e Teardown Reveals MagSafe Upgrade and Easier Repairs

Apple’s iPhone 17e focuses on practical changes inside, and the biggest shift comes from a feature many users felt was missing last year, as the device now adds MagSafe support while keeping a familiar internal design that makes repairs easier and more flexible.

According to iFixit, the teardown reveals that Apple kept most of the iPhone 16e structure while improving usability, and they note that “that kind of cross-compatibility matters” because it makes repairs simpler and parts easier to source.

MagSafe finally returns

The iPhone 17e fixes one of the biggest complaints from the previous model by adding a magnetic ring for MagSafe, which improves wireless charging alignment and allows accessories like battery packs and mounts to attach properly, and iFixit points out that this upgrade alone changes how the phone feels in daily use.

Even more interesting, the back panel with MagSafe works with the iPhone 16e, which means users can swap parts and get similar benefits, although features like animation and full charging speed still depend on software support.

Apple continues to use a dual-entry design, so users can open the phone from the front or back, and this makes battery and display replacements easier without risking other components, while the battery removal system also uses “electrically debonding adhesive” that lets it lift cleanly with power.

Most internal parts also match between the iPhone 16e and 17e, and iFixit even managed to run the phone using a different logic board, though Face ID did not work due to security limits.

USB-C port still a problem

The teardown also highlights a major issue, as the USB-C port sits deep inside the device and requires removing several components before access, which makes repairs harder for a part that often fails with regular use.

The iPhone 17e earns a 7 out of 10 repairability score, and while it does not change the hardware dramatically, it improves real-world usability and opens the door for cheaper repairs and part upgrades, especially for existing iPhone 16e users.
