iTunes DRM Possibly Broken and tvOS Could Have a Vulnerability

A pirate copy of Aquaman circulating among torrent sites could suggest that iTunes DRM has been broken (via TorrentFreak).

The movie copy is the high-quality 4K version. The title “Aquaman.2018.2160p.WEB-DL.DDP5.1.HDR.HEVC-MOMA” is telling, because WEB-DL means it came from streaming and download services like iTunes and Netflix.

It appeared on online shortly after the iTunes release, so the timing lines up. There are also no 4K versions of the movie on Netflix or Amazon, so it couldn’t have come from those sources. Vudu has a 4K version but the pirated version appeared before it went on sale.

The movie could just be mislabeled, but if it’s correct it would be the first known 4K WEB-DL pirated movie. One anonymous source said,

Apple has 4k only on Apple TV running tvOS. I assume they skipped checks, if the device is jailbroken, and someone just dumped the encrypted stream and decrypted it via what’s in memory as keys.

  • I have purchase around 800 iTunes movies. I own at least another 600 or so that I have digitized. I would love to crack the DRM of all of the iTunes movies so that I could use them how I want and not be totally locked into iTunes.
I am not talking about piracy. I don’t have an interest in pirating movies. I simply want the freedom to use what I have purchased how I want to use them.
I wish Requiem was still viable, but that died with iTunes 10.7.

Time for a new de-DRM capability!
