Spotify Takes on Apple Music in India, Get 1 Million Users in a Week

Spotify added over 1 million unique users in India in less than a week of being available there. Its apparent popularity puts pressure on Apple Music, which has already established itself in the highly competitive market.

Two-Tier Service

Spotify launched in India on Tuesday. Since then it has gained over a million unique users across its premium service and a free, ad-driven version it is offering in the country. The free version costs 119 Indian rupees ($1.68) per month (via Reuters).

Crowded Music Market

Apple Music launched in India in July 2015. The presence of Spotify in the gives it another competitor in an already busy, and price-sensitive, market. Amazon Prime Music, Google Play Music, and Xiaomi’s Hungama already operate in India.

India has become an increasing focus for Apple as it looks to broaden its horizons into emerging markets. It hired longtime Nokia executive Ashish Chowdhary to lead its operations in the country in November 2018.
