Want to Dive Into a 3D LEGO Star Wars World? Check Out The Last Jedi 360 Experience

· Jeff Gamet · Cool Stuff Found

LEGO and Star Wars are a pretty awesome combination, and one of their newest games takes that to a wonderfully fun new level with a virtual reality experience. The game is called The Last Jedi 3D Experience and it lets you build ships the Resistance and First Order use in their battle for control of the galaxy. The game plays in a web browser so you don’t need to install any special apps, and if you have Google Cardboard or View-Master VR for your iPhone it’s over-the-top cool. The Last Jedi 3D Experience is free and you can check out the game at the LEGO website.

TMO Background Mode Interview with DigiDNA Co-leader Gregorio Zanon

· John Martellaro · Background Mode Podcast

Gregorio Zanon on Background Mode.

Gregorio Zanon is a co-leader at DigiDNA, in Geneva, Switzerland. His company is the developer of the iMazing app for macOS and Windows that backs up an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch and allows access to that data. Gregorio’s career essentially began when started programming in BASIC on an Amiga at age 10. But he also had a love for classical music and learned to play the piano. That led to college, in London, where studied music and received his degree. Later, inspired by a technical music project, Gregorio got back into coding and so impressed DigiDNA that he was hired. We chatted about the evolution of the DigiDNA company, the iMazing app, how it works, its features and some of the developer challenges with this kind of software as iOS has evolved.

Apple Spotlights Portrait Lighting on iPhone 8 Plus with 'Portraits of Her' [Video]

· Bryan Chaffin · Cool Stuff Found

Apple has a new spot called Portraits of Her to promote Portrait Lighting on iPhone 8 Plus. Portrait Lighting is a new software effect on iPhone 8 Plus that allows you to drastically change lighting on photos shot using Portrait Mode. In Portraits for Her, Apple uses a haunting (and beautiful) song called “This Strange Effect” by The Shacks for a soundtrack. The company also had the unnamed actress in the piece lip-syncing the lyrics as she walked through the city, something I don’t recall in another Apple spot. I like this commercial. The music, the camera shots, and the pacing are all lovely, and it’s another good example of Apple showing us a concept (Portrait Lighting) without doing an explainy spot. I’d love to know your thoughts.

C64 Mini, a Retro Commodore 64 Gaming Console

· Bryan Chaffin · Cool Stuff Found

Retro Games has announced the C64 Mini, a full Commodore 64 in a mini package. Billed specifically as a gaming console, the device is expected to ship in early 2018 with 64 built-in Commodore 64 games. According to HotHardware, the C64 Mini will have two USB ports, one for a joystick and another for a full size keyboard for all your BASIC programming needs. I was already in the Apple camp back in those days, lusting after an Apple //e, but the Commodore 64 did a whole lot for a little money. The C64 Mini version, which is properly licensed, is part of the ongoing wave of nostalgia over old gaming systems, even though the original Commodore 64 was a full computer. The C64 Mini is priced at $69.99, though it hasn’t yet been added to the Retro Games website.
