Third party Lighting to 3.5mm headphone adapters are starting to make their first appearances for the iPhone 7. John Martellaro and Dave Hamilton join Jeff Gamet to look at the headphone adapter market and whether or not most people will really need one. They also respond to listener comments on yesterday’s show where we talked about the limitations of Apple’s Airport Extreme Base Station.

  • The ILdock connector makes sense for me. My two use cases:
    • My primary work vehicle is a 2007 Toyota Sienna. No Bluetooth, AUX in only. Some days my commute can be as long as 2.5 hours each direction. I often run Google Maps or other similar GPS apps, and listen to podcasts and/or music. Without power, my battery can be at 50% or lower by the time I reach my destination. I don’t always have the opportunity to charge during the day.
    • I am a location production audio/video tech. Often I need to use my phone as an audio source, either feeding music or phone conversation audio for recording. In those situations, it is critical that the phone not run out of juice, so needs to be powered at all times.
In both of these situations, I feel that the design of the Ildock will be sufficient. The phone will be supported adequately, so there won’t be risk of the connector “breaking off.” I feel that the other existing solution, the Belkin adapter, adds too many additional cable adapters, thus too many possible points of failure.
