Portrait Mode uses a dual camera system to make your subject stand out from the background with a blurry, shallow focus effect.
This is a great new feature, stymied by conflicting and confusing instructions for use that, strangely enough, vary depending on which model of iPhone you have.
As the story goes, the unnamed woman fled the scene in a taxi, when she found her iPhone 7 Plus with a bullet hole in it.
Olloclip announced Thursday that its popular lens kits (and cases) for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus work out of the box with iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 plus. “This includes compatibility with the Core Lens, Active Lens, Macro Pro Lens and special edition Filmer’s Kit,” the company said. Olloclip makes some of our favorite iPhone lenses, with the Core Lens Kit priced at $99.99. All of the kits are available now.
The Oaxis InkCase i7 Plus is a lot of things. It’s a case for your iPhone 7 Plus, but it’s also an eBook reader. It offers shock absorption, while allowing you check your calendar and reminders without unlocking your iPhone. This is a second screen for your iPhone, as well as a protective case to keep you from breaking it. The InkCase even integrates with Pocket, so you can save your articles to read later and not have to open up your smartphone to peruse those headlines. The real beauty, though, is the eInk display — no more worries about glare from harsh sunlight when you’re trying to read. Oaxis already has the InkCase line available for the iPhone 7, but the new, larger product for the 7 Plus is gaining traction on Kickstarter. With 30 days left in the campaign, Oaxis has already come close to meeting the funding goal to make the case a reality. I received an early review unit of the case recently, and I’m loving it so far. It’s definitely worthy of the moniker “Cool Stuff Found.”
Starting with the iPhone 6s, the camera can shoot 4K video. But how good is that video? Surely, it can’t be as good as an $82,000 professional rig. And it isn’t. In this YouTube video, the Arri Alexa does a 4K video comparison between an iPhone 7 Plus and a pro rig with several side-by-side shots. While the iPhone does a decent job, the comparison and analysis plainly show why you wouldn’t use it for a major theatrical movie. Bottom line, the iPhone is pretty good, but the Arri Alexa records the scenes, especially in low light and warm colors, more like your eyes would actually see them. It’s fascinating, and because of the cost-differential, the take away should be how close iPhone 7 gets, rather than it not being as good.
A revamped Control Center, a new app, and new Settings are just the tip of the iceberg.
Apple published a new iPhone 7 Plus video to its YouTube channel on Monday. The spot shows a barber shop using iPhone 7 Plus’s Portrait Mode camera to promote its business. It’s a charming pitch directly demonstrating a practical way for someone to use the feature in their business. The imagery is compelling and the message is accessible. The soundtrack is “Fantastic Man” by William Onyeabor, an artist who recorded in the ’70s and early ’80s.
Apple released five videos to YouTube Thursday evening, all of them designed to teach you how to shoot on iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus. Topics include shooting action, shooting “great portraits,” shooting close-ups, shooting vertical panoramics (panos), and shooting without Flash. We’ve got all five of them.
Ever been in love? Know how love can sometimes make the whole world disappear into the background? Apple is channeling that in a new iPhone 7 Plus commercial called The City. With the sweet and touching “Sing to Me” by Walter Martin (feat. Karen O), the spot shows two young lovers sheening around a crowded city taking pictures of one another as the the world around them vanishes. “Focus on what you love” with “Portrait Mode in iPhone 7 Plus” are the taglines in the spot. There’s a line from Castle when Becket’s asked how do you know when you’re in love? Her answer: “All the songs make sense.” It’s a great line, and perhaps that’s why this spot resonates with me personally. It definitely makes sense.
Apple launched five new commercials through its YouTube channel Tuesday. Four of them are part of the “Shot on iPhone” series and take us on “One Night” tours of New York City, Johannesburg, Shanghai, and Tokyo. Each commercial is comprised of stills and videos from their respective cities, theoretically taken over one night.
Apple has two new commercials out promoting iPhone 7 Plus’s Portrait camera. That’s the two-lens camera unique to iPhone 7 Plus that allows photographs to have a shallow depth of field (meaning a blurry background and sharp foreground). The pieces explain in very simple terms what Portrait mode on iPhone 7 Plus does for a photo.
Twelve South announced Friday that its SurfacePad leather wrap case is now available for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. I like minimalist leather cases for my iPhones and iPads and I’ve long thought the SurfacePad line is good looking. The back attaches to your iPhone, and the inside of the front cover is lined with microfiber. It has two slots for cards on the inside, too, if that’s your thing. It’s available in Jet Black, Camel and Midnight Blue, for $39.95, and it’s shipping now.
This week Dr. Mac looks at three new iPhone cases he likes and recommends and one iPhone case that was more fragile than the iPhone it was meant to protect.
This is less of a tip and more of a warning. Apple made the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus water and dust resistant, with a rating of IP67. This means that you won’t have to worry as much if you get a wet iPhone. Step One: Don’t panic, and grab your towel.
Still need to use analog headphones with your iPhone 7? Ditch that puny little adapter and kill two birds with one polycarbonate stone with the Incipio OX case, an iPhone case that brings the 3.5mm headphone jack back to your favorite smartphone. The OX looks like a normal slim hardshell case, except for a bit of extra length at the bottom. There, you’ll find both a Lightning and 3.5mm audio jack, powered by an internal DAC. The Incipio OX will be available for both the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in the first quarter of 2017 in Black, Forest, and Purple color options starting at $59.99.
