Reporters Without Borders created The Uncensored Library inside of Minecraft as a way to bypass censorship.
Anyone can download the necessary map, and Minecraft‘s nature makes it easy to host another server if an oppressive country tries to take one down.
Hopefully all of us sharing news about it doesn’t kill it faster.
Minecraft Earth early access is now available for iOS users in the United States. It’s a game that lets players design their creations in AR.
Speaking of Minecraft, registration for Minecraft Earth is now open for those who have iOS 10 or later.
Alas, since it’s a closed Beta, registering doesn’t guarantee you access — but in its FAQ about the Beta, the team notes that they’re planning to open it up to “hundreds of thousands of players” eventually, so your odds of getting in probably aren’t too bad. You’ll need to be over the age of 18, have a device running iOS 10/Android 7 or newer, and a Microsoft or Xbox Live account to get registered.
The registration page is here.
This summer Microsoft will be launching an augmented reality game called Minecraft Earth. And it wants to be bigger than Pokémon Go.
Microsoft says it will kick off a closed beta of Minecraft Earth this summer on iOS and Android. Naturally, there are going to be limited slots, and you’ll also have to be 18 or older to sign up. And while the plan is to get Minecraft Earth completely global, it’s going to start off with a gradual rollout in select locations. You can also expect it to support all the languages in the original game, at least.
I never got into Minecraft, but I look forward to trying this game out.
The first three episodes of a Minecraft interactive television series are now available on Netflix. Yes, that’s right, the game’s maker clearly decided that it is not quite addictive enough and we needed a TV version too. Telltale Games even retained a team to finish the series when many staff were laid off. The Minecraft program follows in the tradition of ‘choose your own adventure’ books. Viewers can decide whether to have a female or male star (called Jesse) and are given choices over how to develop the story. The final two episodes will be on Netflix from 5 December.
Minecraft on Apple TV was discontinued on September 24th, but don’t feel bad for not noticing because no one else did, either.
As part of the Discovery update, Microsoft is also bringing a new feature to the game called Marketplace. Minecraft Marketplace is coming to the Windows 10 platform, as well as Minecraft Pocket edition for mobile platforms. Players can create and sell items in the Marketplace using a form of game currency called Minecraft Coins. When a player creates an item to sell, they can set their own prices as well as take a small percentage of the sale. Once you sell something, such as a custom skin or a map, the app platforms will take a 30% cut. Players can access items they buy through their Xbox Live account. This means that you can access your purchases no matter what platform you use. Microsoft will launch a public beta on Android in mid-April. The beta will test the Microsoft Coins so you won’t see any player creations yet. Microsoft is also hosting a Reddit AMA on April 20 from 9AM-12PM PST.
