Adobe Officially Announces Photoshop 6 With New Web/Print/Photo Features

Adobe has officially unveiled Photoshop 6.0, the next iteration of Adobeis flagship imaging product. The company has added a host of new features aimed at the Web and print communities, as well as the photo hobbyist. The company has also changed the interface and simplified major sections like text editing, something that Photoshop users have been wanting for years. Another areas of major improvement is support for vector-based graphics. Once solely the province of Macromediais Freehand, Adobeis own Illustrator, and other illustration oriented tools, Adobe has made Photoshop into an even more general purpose tool than before. According to Adobe:

Adobe Systems Incorporated today announced Adobe® Photoshop® 6.0. Adobe Photoshop 6.0 delivers dozens of powerful new features including integrated vector functionality, improved Web workflow, and a streamlined interface to help every level of user master its power and flexibility more efficiently than ever before. Now including ImageReady(TM) 3.0, the advanced Web component, Adobe Photoshop 6.0 provides an unbeatable combination of tools that maximize user creativity, precision and control, while helping them work more quickly without the need for other image editing and Web graphics products.

Key Photoshop 6.0 Benefits

Adobe Photoshop 6.0 software maximizes creative possibilities with a wealth of innovative new tools. For Web designers, the combination of new vector drawing tools with powerful rollover styles allows for quick creation of buttons and other Web graphics. And now users can easily create sophisticated, multi-state JavaScript rollovers by saving custom button shapes in libraries then selecting rollover styles in ImageReady 3.0 to automatically slice the buttons and apply a variety of new layer effects. Tighter integration between Photoshop 6.0 and ImageReady 3.0 further speeds the process. When exporting files for the Web, weighted optimization -- an industry first -- allows designers to use grayscale channels to smoothly vary compression settings across an entire image.

The new vector functionality in Photoshop 6.0 has equally powerful applications for print designers as well. By applying vector clipping paths to each layer in a photo composition, designers can combine crisp resolution-independent text and graphics with soft-edged photos in ways that were previously possible only with expensive, high-end systems. In addition, users can format and output these images as Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files or directly to PostScript® printers while maintaining the text as crisp, vector type. Adobe Photoshop 6.0 also opens new artistic possibilities with new content layers, layer styles, warping controls, and other powerful creative features.

Additionally, Adobe Photoshop 6.0 features a more streamlined interface with hundreds of subtle enhancements, including layer management capabilities and an intuitive new context-sensitive tool options bar, that make it much easier for design professionals or new users to explore the power of its comprehensive toolset more deeply.

New Features in Photoshop 6.0 Include:

  • Vector shape drawing with resolution-independent output
  • Tighter integration with ImageReady 3.0
  • On-canvas text entry and advanced formatting
  • Layer styles and new effects
  • Image warping and distortion
  • Interface enhancements including a new context-sensitive
tool options bar and preset manager
  • Extensive PDF workflow including shared PDF annotations
  • Consistent color management with Adobe Illustrator®
  • Streamlined Web workflow with Adobe GoLive(TM)

Seamless Adobe Integration

Adobe Photoshop 6.0 integrates tightly with Adobeis family of professional graphics programs for Web, print and dynamic media, including: Adobe Illustrator®, Adobe InDesign(TM), Adobe GoLive(TM), Adobe LiveMotion(TM), Adobe Acrobat®, Adobe After Effects®, and Adobe Premiere®. These solutions enable users at every level to produce high quality images for any medium.

Adobe has left pricing for the product the same as for version 5.5. The full version is priced at US$609, with upgrades priced at US$199. The product is expected to ship in September of this year (next month). French, German, and Japanese versions will be announced after the release of the English version.
