Apple Simplifies iPod Lineup; Drops 40GB Model (UPDATED)

Apple Computer has discontinued its 40 gigabyte (GB), fourth generation iPod and added the 30GB and 60GB iPod photo models to the complete line of digital media devices.

The only remaining fourth generation, "Clickwheel" iPod with a monochrome display is now the 20GB model, remaining at $299. Pricing for the 30GB and 60GB iPod photo models, at US$349 and $449 respectively, places them in the same price points as the now-discontinued $399 40GB iPod.

Industry sources have confirmed the new 30GB iPod is using Toshibais new one-platter hard drive. As a result, the new model is thinner and lighter compared to the 40GB model, which used a two-platter mechanism.

Apple made no additional changes to features or pricing on the special edition, U2 iPod, which remains priced at $349.00.
