LaCie Debuts Hard Drives in the Form of LEGO Blocks

LaCie on Tuesday introduced its new Brick Desktop Edition and Brick Mobile Edition line of external hard drives, which look like LEGO building blocks. Available in white, red or blue, the desktop Bricks feature USB 2.0 interfaces and come in capacities ranging from 160GB (US$119.99) to 500GB ($399.99) while the mobile Bricks offer USB 2.0 or dual USB 2.0/FireWire 400 connectivity and can hold 40GB ($119.99) to 120GB (USB 2.0: $299.99; dual: $329.99) of data.

LaCie turned to French designer Ora-Ito to create the new drives. He has worked in the past with Adidas, Nike, Swatch and other companies. LaCie does not use the word "LEGO" in association with the new hard drives, but they closely resemble the popular childrenis toy and can be stacked on top of each other.

The company expects to ship the desktop drives at the end of next month while the mobile versions will ship in January. They will come with LaCie One Click Backup software, LaCie Silverlining and SilverKeeper drive management tools and additional backup utilities for use with Macs. The Brick Mobile drives are bus-powered. Mac OS X v10.2.1 is required.
