Roxio Sells Software Division to Sonic Solutions

Roxio/Napster has completed the sale of its consumer software division to Sonic Solutions and will now concentrate its efforts on the ever-growing online music download industry, it was announced Monday.

Under the terms of the deal, Sonic is acquiring all the business and assets of Roxio, "including all products, intellectual property, and trademarks, including the Roxio name," Sonic Solutions said in a prepared statement.

Napster, Inc. chairman and CEO Chris Gorog said, "We are very pleased to have closed this transaction before the end of 2004 so we can now focus 100 per cent of our efforts on taking Napster to new levels of sucess."

More than 200 Roxio employees in the U.S. and overseas will now become employees of Sonic Solutions.

Sonic Solutions does not have any existing consumer products compatible with the Macintosh platform. It does have a number of Macintosh products for professional use, including its DVD publishing system, DVD Fusion, and DVD Creator.

Roxio produces Toast 6 Titanium for Mac, along with Jam 6, Toast with Jam 6, and its DVD copying solution, Popcorn. It is not immediately known what plans Sonic Solutions has for the Roxio-produced Mac products.
