Orbicule on Monday released TheftSensor, a utility that enables MacBook Pro owners to use their Apple Remotes to activate an alarm that sounds if the laptopis lid is closed, or if it is moved or lifted. The user activates and disables the alarm by pressing the Apple Remoteis play/pause button.
While TheftSensor seems very similar to an application called iAlertU, which was announced earlier this month, the developer said in its blog that it was going to make the utility part of an update to its security software Undercover. "I want to stress that we planned this functionality for Undercover 2.0 many months ago," Orbicule founder Peter Schols wrote.
He continued: "While designing Undercover 2, we decided to spin off TheftSensor as a separate application because many Apple laptops donit have a built-in sudden motion sensor (SMS) just yet. Adding this functionality to Undercover would increase the applicationis footprint while it would add no functionality for 85% of our user base, so thatis why we decided to release this as a separate app. "
TheftSensor is currently in Beta. Orbicule did not say when the Beta will expire, nor did it note when the final version would ship. Final pricing and system requirements were not disclosed.
