Apple to Drop Restocking Fees?

The latest rumor making the rounds involves Apple dropping the 10% restocking fee in its stores on Tuesday, January 11th. 9to5 Mac made the claim on Monday, although it didn’t cite the usual “people familiar with the matter” or even: “My best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who’s going with the girl who saw the memo at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it’s pretty serious.”

Of course, 9to5 Mac made the obvious connection with Verizon’s Tuesday media event, where the cellular carrier is widely expected to add the iPhone to its lineup. The thinking is: those people who just bought iPhone 4s can now return them and grab Verizon-compatible models without paying a penalty.

However, Apple’s usual 14-day returns policy will remain in effect.
