Autodesk Releases AutoCAD WS for iPhone, iPad

| Product News

Autodesk’s AutoCAD WS app for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad hit Apple’s App Store on Wednesday. The app lets users view, share and edit AutoCAD DWG files on their iOS devices.

The app supports DWG file layers and image underlays, external document references, drawing and editing shapes, rotating and scaling objects, creating and editing annotations, and validating distance measurements. It also supports multiple users editing documents simultaneously, saving changes to your AutoCAD WS online account, and more.

Autodesk is also planning on releasing a Mac OS X-compatible version of AutoCAD in October.

AutoCAD WS requires a free AutoCAD WS online workspace account for document transfers to and from your iOS device.

AutoCAD WS is free and is available at Apple’s iTunes-based App Store.

I believe it is just a step. I’m sure we’ll get some level of file system access for iOS in the near future.

Also, this is just a first version of the software. It is meant to convince people that iPad can actually be used for work.

This is all part of a process that will ultimately lead to the retirement of Mac OS X and consolidation of all Apple hardware on multi-touch iOS. I’m sure MS and Adobe are working on porting their flagship packages over to iOS. As soon as Apple releases desktop Macs running iOS instead of Mac OS X, we’ll see these packages announced and subsequently released.
