Discover card users are about to join Visa, MasterCard, and American Express credit card users in the Apple Pay game. The company will be adding support for Apple's wireless payment system for the iPhone and Apple Watch this fall.
Discover joins Apple Pay this fall
Apple Pay is the NFC-based transaction system in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, as well as Apple Watch. The feature lets you store your credit cards on your iPhone and make secure payments in stores and restaurants without pulling the physical card from your wallet.
Apple Pay launched with Visa, MasterCard, and American Express on board, but Discover was conspicuously missing from the list. Whatever kept Discover from participating when the iPhone 6 was introduced seems to be resolved because the company is now saying Apple Pay support is on the way.
The company said in a statement,
Discover credit cardmembers will still receive all of their current benefits, including Cashback Bonus and the new Freeze It security tool that allows them to stop any new purchases, cash advances and balance transfers when they temporarily misplace their cards.
That makes sense considering using Apple Pay is the same as using your actual credit card, only more secure because the card number isn't used during transactions.
