Dish Network subscribers will be able to stream live content to their iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, BlackBerry and Android-based devices come September.
To take advantage of live satellite streaming, users will also need a SlingBox or a Dish high definition DVR with SlingBox support. Once connected, users will be able to stream content, change channels remotely, and watch shows that are already recorded on their SlingBox.
Without a second tuner card, users viewing shows on TV and those streaming to their portable device will have to watch the same channel, which will no doubt lead to long distance arguments over the remote control.
Dish’s move to offer live streaming puts it in competition with the likes of Hulu and Netflix for mobile viewers, although both of those companies only offer streaming for already viewed content.
