Final Xserve Orders Delayed To April

Apple will end-of-life its Xserve rack-mount server on Monday, January 31, but the product entry on the online store indicated that current orders will ship in April. AppleInsider noted that no explanation has been provided by Apple.

Apple announced the Xserve’s discontinuation last November, with CEO Steve Jobs telling a customer by email that “hardly anyone” was buying the unit, which didn’t make much of a dent in an industry dominated by such stalwarts as HP and IBM. The company is encouraging those with Mac OS X Server hardware needs to choose between the Mac mini or the Mac Pro, whose 12-core model it says meets or exceeds the performance that the baseline Xserve was offering.
