Hearthstone: Heroes Of Warcraft Released Free on iPad

Blizzard has released a port of Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft for iPad as a free with IAP port of the PC/Mac version available from their site.

If you’re already a Warcraft fan, you can play against the people you have in your Battle.net friends list, but if you don’t have a Battle.net/Real ID account from Blizzard, you can still play and get a feel for the game, you’re just playing against the AI in the game and not against someone you know.

It’s a straightforward customizable card game, where you play “attack” cards against your opponent to score enough hit points to drive them to zero and win. It’s a nicely designed game too, I’m not a Warcraft player so I don’t recognize any characters but the illustrations in the game are impressive.

It appears to be pretty approachable as games go, and it’s been out for more than 20 minutes so if there were any sort of IAP hostage-taking in the app I’m sure it would be going around by now. It seems like it’s nice to play even with no purchases (they range from US $1.99 to $19.99).

As I mentioned I’m not a Warcraft player of any variety, so the name alone won’t compel me to pick it up, but a fun free card game that looks nice is something I could definitely get behind. Seeing someone get an iOS port right like this instead of wrong (Roller Coaster Tycoon 4, anyone?) gives me hope there are at least a few game dev houses who really do get it and will treat some titles like the loved games they are, and not a blatant cash grab.
