Mac Games Arcade Available as Open Beta

Macgamestore.com on Tuesday said that its digital download service Mac Games Arcade is now available as an open Beta. Anyone who wants to be a Beta tester is encouraged to visit the Mac Games Arcade web site and download a copy. A final release date was not announced, but Macgamestore.com previously said the service would launch in December.

The service works as a free application that allows gamers to download digital copies of the games from more than 100 developers selling through Macgamestore.com, which is affiliated with the news site Inside Mac Games. Users can buy and download games from within the software as well as check out demos, write reviews, and maintain a library of their digital purchases.

Customers can also reinstall any game from their purchase history by clicking on it. Mac Games Arcade also auto-registers most of its games, so users don't have to enter serial numbers before they can start playing. Any game that uses third-party DRM (digital rights management) won't auto-register, however.

The software works on any PowerPC or Intel Mac running Mac OS X version 10.4.11 or higher.
