Nokia's Lumia smartphone team is short a key member because Ari Partinen has been hired away by Apple. Mr. Partinen was the Lumia Photography Lead, and no doubt his skills will be put to work to improve the camera features in future iPhone models.

Mr. Partinen told the world about his new job on Twitter saying,

Today will be my last day working for the amazing #Lumia family. In June I will start a new chapter in Cupertino, California. Much love!

He removed any speculation as to which Cupertino company hired him in a second tweet saying, "And it is the company you are thinking assuming you are thinking Apple."

Apple's iPhone camera snaps nice images, but not at the same quality that the Windows-based Lumia 1020, for example, offers. The camera sensors and lenses play a part in that, but the software driving the camera is a critical component, and that's where Mr. Partinen's expertise will come in handy for Apple.

Mr. Partinen had a hand in Nokia's PureView technology, which helped make the Lumia line's cameras some of the best in the industry, according to Engadget. Presumably he'll be bringing some of that magic to the iPhone's built-in camera.

His departure from Nokia follows Microsoft's recent purchase of the company's mobile phone division. That deal cost Microsoft US$7.2 billion, and included top level executives, product designs, and plenty of talent.

When company buyouts happen, there's always talents that choses to leave and pick up new jobs elsewhere. It looks like that's what Mr. Partinen has done, and he managed to land a nice gig at Apple working on one of the world's most popular smartphones.
