NYT Now, the free app from the New York Times, will offer unlimited access to articles from midnight ET Tuesday morning until 11:59 pm ET on Monday October 13. This offer is a coordinated effort with the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, to publicize the AEJMC's first National News Engagement Day on October 7.

Unlimited access to NYT Now normally runs US $8 monthly. Dean Baquet, executive editor of The New York Times explained the freebie: “We hope that allowing unrestricted access to NYT Now helps raise awareness of the important role of journalism, especially during such a turbulent time across the globe.”
At the website for the AEJMC, this is how National News Engagement Day is described:
"…in an era when public regard for the press is at its lowest level, National News Engagement Day provides an opportunity to better educate the public about the press’ principles, process, watchdog role, and First Amendment rights."
Without a subscription, access to stories within NYT Now is limited to 10 articles per month.
