The Never-ending Story: Gifts for Dads & Grads 2016 (Part II)

The Never-ending Story: Gifts for Dads & Grads 2016 (Part II)

Dr. Mac’s Rants & Raves Episode #175

If your dad or grad loves music, why not give them the reasonably-priced gift that will give them months or years of enjoyment—a subscription to Apple Music. Student, individual, or family memberships are a mere $4.99, $9.99, or $14.99 per month respectively. I consider that a bargain for virtually unlimited access to more than 30 million songs.

I absolutely love being able to ask Siri to play almost any song and then hear it (almost) immediately. If your loved one loves music, I can’t imagine them not loving an Apple Music subscription and having 30 million songs available on all of their Apple devices all the time.

Apple Music offers more than 30 million songs for as little as $4.99 a month.

I love music, but I also love books., so when I’m stuck in traffic or traveling by plane or train, I love listening to a good audiobook. So if your loved one spends time in trains, planes, or automobiles, and prefers books over music, why not give them a subscription to Audible—the world’s leading purveyor of audiobooks (which I still stubbornly refer to as, “books on tape”)?

Audiobooks make time fly when you’re in a car, train, or plane.

One audiobook a month is just $14.95, or be a sport and give ‘em two for $22.95. Either way, I’m sure they’ll enjoy listening to new audiobooks each month.

Or, if your dad or grad is the artsy type or a photography nut, consider a Photography subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud, which includes everything they’ll need to organize, edit and share photos on both desktop and mobile devices, namely Adobe Photoshop CC, Adobe Lightroom CC, and a portfolio website for showing off their work, all for just $9.99 a month.

An Adobe Creative Cloud subscription may be just the ticket for artsy dads and grads.

Or, if you’re flush with cash (or they’re super-creative), consider the big Kahuna: A subscription to the entire Adobe Creative Cloud collection for $49.99 a month. It includes over two dozen desktop and mobile apps including Photoshop, Lightroom, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects, and many more professional-quality content creation tools.

I usually don’t like to recommend gift cards. They seem impersonal and seem to imply that you don’t know your dad or grad well enough to select an appropriate gift. But I realize there are some people that are impossible to shop for, and some people that would prefer to shop for themselves, so this year I’m recommending two gift cards any geek worth his or her salt will appreciate, namely gift cards from iTunes or Amazon.

Almost everyone loves a gift card from Amazon or Apple…

You can’t go wrong with an iTunes Gift Card, which can be redeemed for music, movies, TV shows, iBooks, or apps for their Macs or iDevices. Bryan Chaffin even put together a guide for buying discounted iTunes cards. Or pick an Amazon Gift Card that can be used to purchase all of those things and many, many.

And that’s all he wrote…
