Verizon: 26% of its Subscribers Have Smart Phones

During its Q4 earnings report on Tuesday, Verizon noted that only 26% of its 83 million postpaid subscribers — i.e., those in contracts who can buy subsidized handsets — have smartphones, up from 15% at the end of 2009 and giving the iPhone plenty of room for growth when it debuts on that network next month, as the San Francisco Chronicle noted.

Verizon’s customers are also migrating toward the new devices: the company said that more than 75% of its net new postpaid subscribers opted for smartphones in Q4. Last month, BusinessInsider speculated that Apple could sell 10 million iPhones through Verizon in 2011.
