iPAD2 Launch

With less than 48 hours to the launch of iPad2 (pre-orders start at 3am EST on the 11th), it’s time to have a topic focused just on the launch.

Like the original iPAD, this launch is US only. It took 28 days to sell the 1st million devices and they were all in the US since the international launch was a month after the US launch. So we have a good apples to apples (or should I say iPads to iPads) comparison. And since this is an Apple product launch, I expect they will announce something either Monday morning or whenever the 1st million iPad2s are sold.

My bet is that they sell 1 million in the first weekend.

While I hope you’re right, it sounds high to me. Let’s assume 20M iPads have sold thus far (I think it’s a little lower than that, but let’s use round numbers). Of that, I would assume that 12M have sold in the US (60% - which is probably high too). So 12M in 11 months and 2M in 1 weekend. Wow, that would be something.

The current sell off in The stock may be that the market does not agree the the iPad2 will be a big success.  I don’t agree with that viewpoint, but the large number of points of sale does make long lines less likely.  The Apple nay-sayers will probably point to this and sell even more.  I look for a lot of downward pressure on the stock price until/unless Apple announces sales levels early.

The measure of the worth of a product is how much people are willing to pay for it, not how many people will buy it if the price is low enough.

I just went online to order my IPad - it says ships in 3-5 business days. Does anyone know if it has been that way since 4am or has strong demand changed ship times?

    Now Ships: 5-7 business days

edit : back to 3-5 days

750k to a million this weekend

2-3 million total with international launch in 2 weeks, if the supply exists.

Says shipping in 2-3 weeks now.

Supply suckage?  Extreme demand?  A combination of the two? Some stock reserved for international launch?

    What do you think?

Was the “Limit 2 per order” always on the website?  I don’t think I have ever seen any computer company restrict the number of computers you can buy with 1 order.

What supply do you think Apple built up ahead of launch week-end?

I would bet 1.5M to 2M and it will likely be sold out by monday morning.

I was able to order mine 15 minutes before the 1am PT start time.  Delivery is March 18-25.

I think Apple shipped all available supply to retail outlets and is filling all online orders from supply built on or after March 11.

My best guess is 1M - 1.5M sold by Monday.

Yikes, I should have ordered it when it was still 3-5 days. Guess I’ll have to stand in line this weekend!

    FUD alert on the Street

The poll results are absurd.  Changewave is predicting that Apple will capture 82% of future tablet buyers within the next 90 days.  Read here.

OK, here’s an important question - since the online orders started out 3-5 days ship times, all online orders WILL NOT be counted in the weekend sales, right? Apple typically counts a sale only when the product ships, I.e. Ownership changes hands - could that put a damper on weekend sales numbers?

On the flip side, all shipments to retailers/carriers should be counted as sales already even though they might not sell out during the weekend - that will offset the online numbers - who wins this tug of war?
